Haas-Jordan selected for 2017 Maumee Small Business Excellence Award
Haas-Jordan is proud to accept this award for the 2017 Maumee Small Business Excellence Award in the Accessories classification as awarded by the Maumee Small Business Excellence Award Program.
About the Maumee Small Business Excellence Awards Program
Taken from the Small Business Excellence website;
"The Maumee Small Business Excellence Awards recognizes outstanding small businesses that serve the Maumee area. Each year, our selection committee identifies businesses that we believe have achieved outstanding marketing success in their local community and business classification. The Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Recognition is given to those companies that have shown the ability to use their best practices and implemented programs to generate competitive advantages and long-term value. These are small businesses that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community.
These exceptional companies help make the Maumee area a vibrant and vital place to live.
The Maumee Small Business Excellence Awards was established to reward the best of small businesses in Maumee. Our organization works exclusively with local business owners, trade groups, professional associations and other business advertising and marketing groups. Our mission is to award the small business community’s contributions to the U.S. economy."
Secretary of State, Jon Husted, paid a visit to Haas-Jordan to honor the company as one of the oldest companies in Ohio and to feature Haas-Jordan in the Ohio Business Profile program. The Toledo Blade also published an article about Haas-Jordan's long company history:
It’s a probably a safe bet that Todd Blackmar is the only guy who goes to a golf tournament and hopes for rain. But what do you expect from an umbrella salesman?
“Everybody else is wanting sun. I run around like a kid in the candy store when it’s raining,” he said with a laugh.
Mr. Blackmar is the owner of Haas-Jordan, a Springfield Township umbrella manufacturer that traces its history to 1899. The firm specializes in customized umbrellas, including exclusive rights for a number of major golf tournaments such as the U.S. Open and the Ryder Cup. They also do work for the likes of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz.
“I think we are the absolute best at what we do, so a lot of the high-end people come to us,” Mr. Blackmar explained.
Haas-Jordan was recognized Tuesday by Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, who chose the firm as one of several Ohio manufacturing businesses to be featured in August by his office’s Ohio Business Profile program.
The firm that would become Haas-Jordan was founded in Norwalk but moved to Toledo, where it occupied the same place on Summit Street for more than 100 years. It grew significantly under the leadership of Mr. Blackmar’s great-grandfather, Cloyd Haas, and is still one of the premier firms in the sector.
Mr. Blackmar, who had been company president since 2010, bought Haas-Jordan from the Maumee-based F.J Westcott Co. in 2014.
Since then, he’s focused on expanding the company’s reach and profile. One of the first orders of business was bringing printing back in-house. The majority of the company’s umbrella manufacturing is contracted to overseas vendors, though some specialty work is done elsewhere in Ohio.
Just last month, Mr. Blackmar launched Spitting Image LLC, a custom printing company. The new business, operating next-door as a sister company to Haas-Jordan, gives Mr. Blackmar more capabilities and more opportunities, particularly with local retail.
“We’ve always had a national market,” he said, “but I think we also have a local market now too because we can do personalized items that aren’t just for golf, that aren’t just for the corporate sector, that can be ordered online.”
By using heat to transfer images from a special paper to polyester, Spitting Image can do everything from shirts, to phone cases, to aluminum-backed mosaics. And because of the simplicity of the process, officials there say they can essentially do one-off jobs rather than requiring minimum orders.
Haas-Jordan and Spitting Image have about 20 employees and generates annual revenues in the range of $2 million to $5 million.
And while Haas-Jordan has expanded to offer a handful of other products, umbrellas remain key.
“It’s always going to rain,” Mr. Blackmar said. “You’ve got death, taxes, and you’ve got rain. That’s the three guarantees in life. They’re [umbrellas] something nobody wants to buy, but everybody needs. And instead of just being black, and navy, and dreary, we bring them alive with vivid printing.”

Supplying clean water means increased health and education for impoverished women and children. According to the WHO, disease from unsafe water and lack of sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. 90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are in children under five years old. You have the power to stop these deaths.
Unsafe water also effects gender equality. In most cases women and children are responsible for water collection exposing them to unsafe trails, harassment, and sexual assault. With safe water near schools women have the time to pursue education that improves their quality of life.
